I-40 & Choctaw Road Interchange
- Client: Oklahoma Department of Transportation
- Project Type: Structural Design, Roadway Design, Traffic Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, ADA Compliance, Transportation Management Planning
About this Project
EST provided design services for this project, the purpose of which is to add eastbound and westbound driving lanes to Interstate 40 and make improvements to the Interstate 40 connections with Interstate 240. Additionally, the Interstate 40 interchange at Choctaw Road was reconstructed to provide a diamond interchange configuration. The improvements to the interchange included reconstructing a portion of Choctaw Road. The parallel bridges on Interstate 40 over Choctaw Road were replaced with a single 2-span (122’-140’) steel girder bridge having the proper vertical clearance over Choctaw Road. For the duration of the project, two lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions of Interstate 40 will be maintained, and the construction will be phased to accommodate this requirement. To provide a more cost-effective project, EST made alterations to the conceptual plans completed during the preliminary report stage that allowed a savings of nearly 1 million dollars. The alterations to the traffic control plan eliminated the need for a very wide bridge over Choctaw Road with crossovers and allowed our bridge design to change to narrower parallel bridges. With a project this size the schedule adjusted several times due to coordination of adjacent projects and budgeting constraints, but EST was able to adjust and provide timely deliverables at each stage during the design process with an award-winning final product.
